So, back in the day this activity would have been perfect for either the Roget or Webster dictionary ubiquitous in every classroom and home. Today, it is perfectly great to use an online dictionary. The use of reference materials is still important, even though the format has changed.

How to Put Together the Activity:

To use, simply write in three words you want the student to look up. It is easier to start with concrete nouns - once they master these you can move to more abstract words. The student then draws a picture, writes a definition under four words, a related word, and a rhyming word.

Use this a part of a thematic unit or vocabulary around your student's interests to make it motivating and relevant!
